Nile Life — Privacy Policy
Last updated: 17th September 2026
Nile Life ("we", "us", "our") runs this website (www.nilelife.africa) to share the story of a small, nature-first river camp being built on the Nile near Jinja, Uganda, and to build a community of people following that journey ahead of opening.
This policy explains what personal data we collect through the site, why, and what choices you have. We've tried to keep it short and honest, in keeping with how we talk about everything else.
Who we are
Nile Life is founded and run by Iain Patton. For any privacy question, contact:
What we collect
If you join our mailing list or a waitlist/register-interest form Your name and email address, and anything you choose to write in a message field.
If you contact us directly. Whatever you send us — typically your name, email address, and the content of your message.
If you join our WhatsApp community Joining is via a link we share on the site. Once you join, your phone number and any messages are handled by WhatsApp under Meta's own privacy policy, not ours — we can see who's in the group but don't otherwise process that data on the site itself.
When you browse the site Standard technical data collected automatically by our website platform (Squarespace) and by YouTube where we embed videos — things like IP address, browser type, device type, and pages viewed. This is mostly aggregated/statistical and isn't used to identify you personally. See the cookie note below.
What we don't collect We don't currently take bookings or payments through this site, so we don't collect card numbers, billing details, or booking information here. If that changes, this policy will be updated first.
Why we collect it
To send you updates about the project (build progress, videos, news) if you've asked to receive them
To respond to enquiries you send us
To understand, in general terms, how many people are visiting the site and which content resonates, so we can improve it
To keep a record of who has expressed interest in future stays or in supporting the project, so we can follow up when there's something concrete to offer
We rely on your consent for marketing emails (you can withdraw it any time — see "Your choices" below), and on our legitimate interest in running and improving the site for the basic analytics.
Who we share it with
We don't sell your data. We share it only with the service providers who help us run the site and communicate with you, for example:
Squarespace (website hosting and, if used, its built-in mailing list/analytics tools)
Brevo email tools
YouTube/Google, when you interact with embedded videos
WhatsApp/Meta, if you choose to join our community group
Each of these providers processes data under their own privacy policy as well as ours. We don't share your details with anyone for their own marketing purposes.
Where your data is processed
Nile Life is based in Uganda, with the founder also spending time in the UK. Our service providers (Squarespace, Google, Meta) may process data in the US, EU/UK, or elsewhere. Where that happens, those providers maintain their own safeguards for international transfers.
How long we keep it
We keep mailing list and enquiry data for as long as you remain subscribed or until you ask us to delete it, and periodically review our lists to remove inactive contacts. We keep enquiry emails for as long as reasonably needed to resolve the matter and for our records afterwards.
Your choices
You can:
Unsubscribe from any email at any time, using the link in the email or by contacting us directly
Ask what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it
Leave the WhatsApp group at any time, and manage your own WhatsApp privacy settings independently of us
To exercise any of these, email ugandapartnership@yahoo.com
Depending on your location, you may also have rights under UK GDPR (if you're in the UK), the EU GDPR (if you're in the EU), or Uganda's Data Protection and Privacy Act 2019 (if you're in Uganda), including the right to complain to your local data protection authority if you're unhappy with how we've handled your data.
Cookies
The site uses cookies set by Squarespace (for basic site functionality and analytics) and by YouTube where videos are embedded. You can control cookies through your browser settings; blocking them may affect how some parts of the site work, particularly embedded video.
Children
Nile Life isn't directed at children, and we don't knowingly collect data from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has given us information, contact us and we'll remove it.
Changes to this policy
As the project develops — particularly once crowdfunding or bookings launch — this policy will need updating to reflect new data we collect (such as payment details). We'll post the updated version here with a new "last updated" date.
